A butterfly rests on a sunflower

An orange-and-black butterfly rests with its wings open across the broad center of a sunflower. Fine dark lines divide the wings into panels, and small pale markings trace their edges. Beneath them, the flower’s dense golden disk forms a textured field that occupies much of the frame. Bright yellow petals radiate outward, some curling slightly at their tips, creating a layered border around the butterfly. Large green leaves enter from the sides, while patches of blue sky make the warm colors appear even more vivid. The composition draws the eye first to the butterfly’s symmetrical wings and then outward to the sunflower’s circular form. There is an appealing balance between the small, sharply patterned insect and the oversized flower head beneath it. Neither subject disappears into the other: their different shapes and scales make the resting point easy to read at a glance.
