A Braided River Winds Through Green Plains
A broad blue river enters the foreground and curves toward the distant horizon, dividing into many winding channels across a flat green plain. Narrow strips of land and pale, exposed banks separate the streams, creating a braided pattern that changes in width as it recedes. From this elevated viewpoint, the water’s bends form the strongest lines in the composition, while the surrounding grasslands create a wide, relatively even field of color. The river’s route feels almost drawn across the landscape.
Near the horizon, low hills and distant mountains add a soft boundary to the otherwise open view. The water reflects the pale sky in places, shifting between blue and silvery tones; the green land around it ranges from darker patches near the channels to brighter stretches farther away. There is no single building or person to set the scale, so the scene’s structure comes from the river itself and its repeated branches. In contrast to the steep, snow-covered terrain elsewhere in this collection, this landscape is defined by gentle contours and an expansive horizontal reach.
