A Highland cow leans into the frame
A long-haired Highland cow leans over a wooden rail, bringing its broad muzzle and curled tongue unusually close to the camera. Its shaggy golden coat fills much of the foreground, while long horns extend outward on either side of the head. The open mouth and visible tongue create a lively expression; the close perspective makes these features appear especially prominent. A second, similarly shaggy animal is partly visible behind it, adding another layer of warm color and texture.
The setting opens out beyond the animals to a sloping green pasture, a wide body of water and dark hills along the horizon. Sunlight glints across the water, forming a bright band that contrasts with the shaded, textured coats in front. The wooden rail cuts across the bottom edge and helps establish how close the cow is to the viewpoint. It is a portrait with two scales at once: an expressive, tightly framed animal encounter set against an expansive landscape.
