8. The Power of a Sliding Window

Originally a lovely picture of a woman promoting something or another on the side of this train, it soon became a scary and funny image of a bug-eyed woman with roving bobblehead-like traits. Clearly, the creators of this considered not the potential of their model's eyes moving with the windows. This control turns an apparently striking into an inadvertently funny show. Alternatively they might have at last realised why they were able to negotiate such a low price from the train operator. It is difficult to overlook the strange effect produced by the model's calm posture against the turbulent train movement. Though most likely not what the original advertisers had in mind when they sought out to buy ad space, this photo most surely attracted the eye of some other possible customers (pun intended). This event reminds us of the erratic nature of public space advertising, in which design features can combine in unanticipated ways producing memorable—if not totally desired—results.
